An American view of French healthcare

Postby pennycsf » Tue Dec 20, 2016 1:34 pm

This article is a little out of date as it relates to events in France in 2013, the costs of seeing the GP has gone up from €18 to €23 for example. However, for me, the sentiments described by this American family remain the same, the system, on the whole, runs around the patient :D , the patient doesn't run around the system  ! Have a look at the link below and see what you think:

I feel it depends on which region you live in. Obviously Paris has the better consultants. My personal experience is totally different. I have just waited 16 months for the result of a genetic blood test, still got to wait to know properly because the appointment is in another 4 weeks! Although my diagnosis was good in 2008 there was a catalogue of disasters with the surgeons. Sent to a radiotherapist to be told I needed to go back in because one I should have been sent to an oncologist, the consultant then admitted me for another op to ensure all bad tissue removed, follow up that took less than a minute, etc. So now I don't go for check ups because I don't want to waste my day for a less than a minute consultation.

Hi there,
I'm really sorry that your experience has been so negative. I too have been lucky and have found the care more patient centred than I expected. Of course, it depends on the specialist and presumably the location also plays a part. I suppose we can only speak as we find and I do hope that you persevere and find someone with whom you can communicate properly.

Best of luck, ;)
