Tamoxifen for 10 years?

Post by pennycsf » Mon Aug 19, 2013 8:33 am

A new study led by Cancer Research UK ( which was presented at the 2013 ASCO conference in USA) indicates that taking tamoxifen for 10 years gives better protection from recurrence of breast cancer and reduces the mortality rate. The increased risk of endometrial or other cancers associated with tamoxifen is far outweighed by the benefits.

Here are the figures taken from the Press Release on 2nd June 2013:
Breast cancer recurred in 580 women from the 3,468 taking tamoxifen for ten years, compared to 672 of 3485 women who stopped tamoxifen after five years.

There were 849 deaths among the ten year tamoxifen group compared to 910 deaths in the five year tamoxifen group.
Interesting. :) I wonder if there are any studies under way on taking long term AIs?
