Cholestrol and BC

Post by pennycsf » Sun Dec 01, 2013 8:22 pm

Have you spotted the recent research into a link between BC and cholestrol?

We all know that most (but not all) cases of breast cancer are affected by the hormones oestrogen and progestrone which are produced naturally by our bodies. The hormones effectively "feed" the cancer. A recent study with mice shows that BC can be fuelled by cholestrol which mimics oestrogen. Much more research is needed, of course, but it highlights again the need to keep to a healthy weight.

As Dr Emma Smith, from Cancer Research UK, said: "This study is intriguing as it shows for the first time a direct link between cholesterol and breast cancer in mice - but it's too early to say how this knowledge might help tackle breast cancer in the future.

"As things stand, until we know more about the effects of statins on cancer risk, the best ways to cut the risk of developing breast cancer are to stay a healthy weight, cut down on alcohol and keep active."
