How best to help a friend

Postby Sable » Fri Jan 03, 2014 8:04 pm

Hi, I have a close friend who has just been diagnosed with Breast cancer and is due to have a mastectomy this month. She is very 'head in the sand' about anything medical and really doesn't know, or want to know what questions to ask her surgeon. She has not been offered a reconstruction (is this normal?). I am concerned that she may regret not asking, but do not want to 'push' her to confront info she really can't handle. Any advice on how I can help her pre and post op would be gratefully received.

Hello Sable,
It is always difficult to help a friend as you are also emotionaly involved. I can't give any advice except perhaps to say that she needs you to be there for her in her own time. Don't rush her. Even if you feel she may be a "head in the sand" person, it is unlikely that her surgeon will not mention a reconstruction if that is suitable and it is possible that she needs to take on board the shock of a mastectomy before she can look forward.

Good luck and do get back to us here,
Penny
