I am in the process of arranging to have a reconstruction after one mastectomy last september in Perpignan. I thought I would prefer a latissimus dorsi operation . After going to see the plastic surgeon he told me I couldn't have this option as my skin would be too thin after radio therapy and offered an implant , after a brief discussion where I stated my preference for something more natural, he offered me a TRAM next January . Having looked into this I was alarmed at the invasive intervention this involved, and have since U turned to the possibility of an implant . I have been for a second opinion and have been offered an implant and the latissimus dorsi operation as a second option.
I am confused! has anyone had any experience of these operations.I would appreciate an opinion.
Additionally I am not sure which surgeon to go with ! cant see much on line. cost is another issue , I have 100% with CPAM . but I am unsure if they will pay for adjustments for the other boob . any advice would be a great help .
Thank you in advance.
It does all seem so confusing, doesn't it! I have contacted a member of our CSF group who had a reconstruction earlier this year, I can't remember whether it was latissimus dorsi or implant or even something else but she is very happy to have taken the plunge. I've asked her to post and maybe you can chat.
Can I ask where you went from Perpignan for the second opinion?
I am the girl that Penny referred to!
I had the latissimus dorsi op, back in March, with implant. Strangely enough, my plastic surgeon recommended this course of action for me because my skin was thin after radio and I didn't have much spare. I thought it was going to be really invasive, but in fact, it was a much easier recovery than I thought and I was really pleased with the results within hours of the op.
I would be quite happy to have a chat with you, or email about this? If you would like to contact me, my email address is email@example.com.
With regards to cost - It cost me nothing, and he said that they would not recommend doing anything with the other boob until at least a year has passed and he sees how original op went. BTW, I was operated on by Dr. Soubirac in the Clinic Les Cedres, Toulouse. He was excellent. He was young and up to date on latest methods - I was very happy with him and with the follow up.
Hope this helps?
It is likely you could ask to be referred from the P-O to Toulouse or Montpellier for a second opinion. You might need to pay your travel costs, but as they have more "specialist" doctors there isn't usually a problem with consultation costs.
